Sports Massage

Sports massage is designed to enhance athletic performance and recovery. There are three contexts in which sports massage can be useful to an athlete: pre-event, post-event and injury treatment. Pre-event massage is delivered at the performance site, usually with the athlete fully clothed. This type of massage helps to establish blood flow and to warm up muscles. Post-event massage serves to calm the nervous system and begin the process of flushing toxins and waste products out of the body. Post-event massage can reduce recovery time, enabling an athlete to resume training sooner than rest alone would allow.

Lymphatic Massage

Lymphatic massage is very light massage, is very relaxing and is used to promote healthy flow of lymph, the clear fluid that flows throughout our bodies. The body system responsible for our immunity is lymphatic system.  Since the lymphatic system is the “garbage collector” of our body, this type of massage helps locate any imbalance/blockage in the system and reestablish healthy flow moving toxins out of the body.

Trigger Point Massage

This is not as much massage as it is using different points on the body to create a release of the muscles. The technique was created back during the Kennedy administration. It uses areas of the muscle that have contraction and relaxation states to illicit a response of relaxation of the muscle.

Gua Sha

At the beginning of the session the skin is covered with a massage oil that acts as a lubricant. The therapist then presses the muscles to locate areas of tension. When these areas have been identified, the gua sha tool (a smooth-edged tool often made from animal bone, horn or jade) is placed against the skin, pressed down firmly and moved along in strokes. The friction of the strokes brings toxins to the surface, allowing the body to slowly remove them from the system.

 Reflexology

Reflexology is an alternative therapeutic treatment based on the idea that the body has an inner network of reflex points that connect to other organs. The reflex points that are targeted are in the hands, feet and ears, but are connected to body systems and internal organs, from the lymphatic system to the bladder. In a reflexology treatment session, pressure is applied to certain sections of feet, hands or other areas. As a result of the body’s natural reflex zones, the correlating body system or organs benefit from the pressure.

Cupping

Cupping releases toxins, increases the blood flow, realigns qi, and resolves obstruction, muscle soreness, and pain.  It is also an excellent treatment for a wide variety of pain, lymphatic, and respiratory conditions In a typical cupping session, smooth glass cups are warmed using a cotton ball dipped in alcohol, which is burned and then run through the inside of the cup.  This action removes all the oxygen from the cup, creating a vacuum.  The cup is then quickly turned upside down on the specific area to be treated.  The vacuum gently lifts the skin upward toward the cup.  Cups can be left in place to remove deep stagnation or moved gently over the skin.
